The birth of Rumi

I was feeling slight pains at around 2.30am and went to the toilet where I noticed I had my “bloody show”. I was excited because I was 10 days over my due date at this point and had eagerly been waiting for Labour to get going most nights.

I stayed at home for about 6 hours timing my surges. Using my affirmations and breathing tools, I was able to breath and move through all the surges with my birthing ball and comb in hand.

When I felt the timings of the surges were frequent enough, we went to the hospital. I was 4cm dilated and was able to go into the meadow birthing suite which was amazing. Reece placed candles around the pool while the midwife filled it and I was listening to my hypnobirthing tracks that kept me breathing through the surges that were coming much more regularly.

I was in the pool for a couple of hours and was able to breathe through my surges but I felt the intensity was increasing and I needed some extra help to ride the waves. The midwife was lovely and when I asked what my options were, she offered pethidine. It was just the break I needed so I could relax through the Labour a little and save my energy.

My waters still hadn’t broken and the midwife did an examination where we found out that only one side of my cervix was dilating and the other side still had at least 5-6cm to go. I wanted to wait for my waters to break on their own but after another few hours; there still wasn’t much progress so I had my waters broken for me. We then noticed that my baby had pooed in the sack which meant we were moved from the meadow birthing suite to the delivery suite.

At this point I had asked for an epidural as the surges intensity rose after my waters had broke but Rumi was on her way and I started to push with my surges. After pushing for over an hour and a half, a consultant advised using the ventouse to help get her out as she wasn’t making much progress down the birth canal. The ventouse didn’t work as it actually came off her head!

But this is when we noticed she was back to back, so with the help of forceps, I gave birth to a beautiful 7lb 14oz healthy baby girl!

Even though circumstances changed throughout the Labour, I was super proud and felt prepared (with the help of Anna and her course) for everything that came our way to make Rumi’s birth the most comfortable experience. We took it in our strides and I wouldn’t have changed a thing. The woman’s body is an incredible thing!
